Here’s why hustling hard can have a devastating effect on your business and life. There is an easier way to manifest business success by changing your belief system.
There is a very toxic culture in the entrepreneurial world of hustling so hard that you make yourself sick.
I personally have experienced the devastating effects of hustling myself all the way to a major burnout, and I have seen a large number of other entrepreneurs doing the same thing.
Today I’m sharing an important message that is something I am very passionate about, and that is to tell you that there is another way, a much easier way.
It is called manifesting.
When you manifest your success, you can stop hustling altogether and get much better results.
You can work less hours, have more fun at work, and do it in the way that you want to do it.
Today, I’m going to show you how to do this.

If you believe all of the lies that the hustle culture tells you, these hustle gurus will tell you that the only thing that matters is hustle, and that you can’t get ahead without working your fingers to the bone, giving up your entire life, and forcing yourself to do work you hate.
I fell into this trap myself on several occasions, and now I’m here to tell you that there is another way.
Why The Hustle Culture Is Toxic
1. Hustling Leads To An Unbalanced Life
It might sound obvious but, when you are focusing all of your waking hours on working, you obviously have to make sacrifices. You have to sacrifice your family, your friends, fun, exercise, healthy eating, relaxation, sleep, and ultimately your sanity, and health.
Once you start on the slippery slope of sacrificing essential parts of your life, it leads to more and more sacrifices until you are literally a shadow of your former self.
Once you’ve given up on your daily run so you can just clear your inbox, where does that mentality end? What is next?
Believe me once you sacrifice one important thing in your life, very quickly everything else follows.
The reason for this is because you have a certain belief system at the moment which might be that health is important to you, and fun, and relationships are important to you.
As soon as you sacrifice one of the things that are important to you, you’ve literally abandoned your whole belief system. You’ve thrown balance out of the window and now have the new belief system that the only thing that matters is to work longer and longer hours.
Very soon you will quickly find yourself existing solely on chocolate bars and coffee, allowing yourself very little time to sleep, but being so wired when you’re in your bed you can’t actually get to sleep anyway, and then one little thing like a cold or a flu literally creates a burnout in your body so big that you can’t even get out of bed if you wanted to.
I have been there. This happened to me and I wasn’t able to work, look after my kids, do exercise, see friends or even make dinner for my family for over 6 months.
Severe burnout and adrenal fatigue is no joke. And the worst thing is it can happen so fast you didn’t even see the writing on the wall.
If you have believed the lies that hustling to the exclusion of all else is what is needed I urge you to change your belief system right now, and choose a healthier belief.
Yes there are some things that you can sacrifice without it affecting the quality of your life such as watching TV, or scrolling through social media feeds, but anything that directly affects the quality of your life and your own mental and physical health should never be sacrificed.
These things should never be sacrificed for work:
- Healthy eating
- Winding down for at least 1 hour before bed
- A daily mindset practice
- Regular time to socialise and have fun with other people
- Doing something fun each day
- Getting fresh air
As soon as you find yourself justifying why it’s OK to cut one of these healthy practices out of your life, you might find yourself in trouble.
And if you don’t currently have a balanced life that incorporates all of these activities, I highly recommend that you start.
Without your health, you have nothing. Believe me I know.
2. Hustling Leads To Sickness And Burnout
More often than not, hustling leads to sickness and burnout.
Not only do you end up sacrificing all of the things in your life that keep you healthy, but you also tip the scales towards sickness much more quickly by introducing a major amount of stress into your life.
Not only will you be physically stressed from not taking care of your health, but you will be mentally stressed from taking on the attitude of having to push, push, push all of the time, which is very taxing for the mind and body.
When the body is in a state of constant stress, it is in fight or flight mode, meaning that the body’s healing activity literally comes to a halt. The cells in the body only allow themselves to heal and regenerate when the body and mind is in a relaxed state.
When you are constantly stressed, even during sleep, your body has halted the normal regenerative activity, which means your cells are automatically programmed to be on high alert for danger.
If you stay in this state for too long, it just takes one thing to push you over the edge and your body says enough is enough. I am forcing you to take a break. I’m making you unable to move because you literally don’t have the energy needed to do anything right now.
Did you know that most heart attacks happen on a Monday? And the least heart attacks happen on a Saturday. Just the stress of dealing with work on a Monday literally causes people’s hearts to stop. I’m not over exaggerating this because this is really serious stuff that I’m urging you not to ignore.
3. Time Is Finite: You Can’t Hustle Your Way To More Time
What is the logic behind hustling every second of every day?
The gurus will tell you that the more hours you work, the more successful you are.
It sounds logical when we first hear that argument.
After all, people who don’t do any work get no success, so surely the opposite of this is true, that the people who work the longest hours are the most successful?
It sounds good but unfortunately it is simply not true.
Let’s put this argument to the test.
Is it really true that the people who work the longest hours and work the hardest are the most successful?
Think about any factory worker, or anyone who does horrendously hard labor for long periods of time like a miner or a sewer cleaner. To me, those are some of the hardest jobs in the world.
Does working harder and longer guarantee your success?
We all know of people who work very hard, and very long hours and don’t make much money.
There are also far too many business owners who are working long and hard and don’t get paid anything at all.
Yes, it’s true. Most business owners earn less than a minimum wage and work longer hours for absolutely nothing.
A lot of people discover that the only freedom in having their own business is the ability to work longer hours and not get paid for it.
Here’s something else to ponder.
If working longer hours could guarantee your success, how can you get ahead when other business owners have teams of people who are collectively working much longer hours than you are physically capable of.
If you are working 16 hour days, 7 days a week, the maximum number of hours you can physically work in a week is 112.
But say another business in your marketplace has hired 5 people to do the same job that you are doing. Say each of these 5 people works for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
Not only is everyone in this team, balanced, healthy, and sharp, but collectively, they work a total of 200 hours a week – a lot more than you are working. So surely they are going to be more successful than you are?
Your time is finite.
Your energy and health are also finite.
What is not unlimited needs to be protected before it runs out.
Working longer does not guarantee you will be successful. It’s much more likely to make you unsuccessful.
4. Stress Brings You The Opposite Of What You Want
Let’s play devil’s advocate now.
Some people may argue with me and say “what about this famous person who hustled hard, was, and still is successful, has not burned out and is very wealthy”?
Here’s what I’d say in response to that.
Yes I agree, some people do work long hours and appear to be very successful and still seem to be full of energy.
However, if you look hard enough, you could also find numerous famous people who got the same levels of success, and also managed to stay balanced and have fun in the process.
If you could choose one or the other, which would you choose?
There are role models for all walks of life, and why would you follow a role model that tells you there is no gain without pain? Probably because you already have a belief that you have to suffer to get success.
I know which path I would choose to go down and I’m walking that path myself right now.
And the reason I’ve chosen the easy, successful path is because I have done a lot of work on my belief system and chosen what I want to be true in my own life.
Also another thing to bear in mind is that you don’t truly know how someone’s really feeling. Just because they are telling you that they are successful, doesn’t mean they feel good inside themselves. Maybe their wife has just left them, or they don’t spend any time with their kids, maybe they are taking drugs just to keep themselves going. Appearances can be deceptive.
Did you know that stress brings you the opposite of what you want?
This is because, when you are feeling stressed, you are attracting more stress into your life.
And when you feel relaxed and successful, you attract more of those same feelings into your life.
The law of attraction is always working. Whatever you feel, you are bringing more of that into your life.
If you believe that work is stressful then you’ll be in a constant state of stress, and this doesn’t lead to success.
Stress causes you to make silly decisions, gives you brain fog, causes you pain and suffering and does not lead to success.
You can’t be in a state of receiving (success) when you are in a state of stress. It would be very unlikely for someone to believe that feeling stressed leads to success because they are more than likely noticing all of the negative consequences of the stress in their lives and feeling a sense of constant dread.
How Your Belief System Affects Your Success
So how do hustlers get successful if hustling is so bad for you?
Here’s the truth.
Your belief system will get you exactly what you believe you will get.
If you believe that eating junk, not sleeping, and feeling stressed will lead to a burnout and you do this, you’ll burn out.
If you believe that ignoring your friends and family leads to relationship breakdowns that is what will happen.
If you believe that you are successful, but that you have to work hard for that success, you’ll be successful by working hard.
If you believe that work is fun, and you enjoy your work, but you believe that you have to work long hours to be successful, then you’ll enjoy your work, work long hours and be successful.
If you believe that work gets to be fun, you can have a totally balanced life, you do a manageable amount of work on a regular basis and this leads you to success, then you’ll be successful.
Whatever your truth is is your truth. Which truth do you want?
How To Stop Hustling
1. Decide What You Want To Believe
Hustling hard by working longer and longer to the exclusion of a healthy balanced life is actually a form of addition.
It is very easy to get addicted to work, and this is especially true if you own your own business.
Your business becomes your baby and it is such a large investment of your time and energy.
You’ve already invested so much of your time into your business and you just believe that if you work a little harder, you’ll push your business over the edge.
I hope I’ve convinced you that it doesn’t work this way.
To break the negative pattern of hustling, the first step is to decide what you want to believe.
You will literally get what you want because like attracts like.
What do you want to believe when it comes to your success and your business?
What kind of results do you want?
This is why it is so important to set goals, because if you don’t know what you want, how will you know when you’ve got there?
- How much revenue do you want your business to make?
- What do you want to offer in return for that money?
- And what kind of business owner do you want to be?
You might be thinking, well setting goals are just going to make me work even harder as I’ll be under so much pressure to achieve my goals.
I totally understand how you feel because I was caught in this negative loop for many years.
And finally I’ve managed to break free from this and set goals that do not put pressure on me to achieve the impossible.
I have a much healthier relationship with goals now and I am so passionate about this topic I wrote a whole book on it.
My book STAMP Goals will walk you through the process of setting goals that don’t stress you out, and actually achieving them.
2. Decide How Many Hours You Want To Work
Now that you’ve decided what you want to achieve in your business, you need to set some limits on your own time so you can hustle less and manifest more.
How many hours do you want to work per week, or per day? And how many days per week?
Really think carefully about your answer.
In an ideal world, if you could achieve all of your goals, how many hours would you work?
And don’t say none because that would get boring after a while. If you truly love your work, you’ll want to do it on a regular basis.
For me personally, I work between 3-4 hours per day, 5 days per week, and I take at least 6 weeks of vacation time every year. I love my work and I feel really good working this number of hours.
I also love spending time with my family and everything else that keeps me healthy, so that’s why I balance my time to include everything I want during one day.
3. Decide That You Are Worthy Of A Work Life Balance
The main issue that most people have when it comes to deciding to work less and manifest more is that they don’t actually believe they are worth it.
They already have a belief system that says “I am only worth having a successful business if I have almost killed myself to get it”. And if that is what you believe, that is what you will manifest.
Do you have something stopping you from even deciding to work less hours?
What belief is stopping you?
Are you willing to let that belief go now?
If not, why not?
What are the advantages of carrying on thinking this way?
What are the advantages of letting go of this belief?
I have a section in STAMP Goals book that walks you through the process of letting go of these kinds of beliefs that are causing you suffering.
How To Hustle-Less And Manifest More
1. Start A Morning Mindset Routine
The best way to overcome a hustle addiction and get into the frame of mind of manifesting more is to start a positive morning routine where you focus on your state of mind.
If you make a healthy, positive mindset a priority by starting your day in this way, you will always set yourself up for success.
By starting the day focused on something that is NOT work, but it is something that will benefit your entire life, you are sending a powerful signal that you are worthy of success and happiness.
There are so many different things you can do during a morning routine.
I have another blog post that shares over 100 ideas for a positive morning routine with you, so go and check that out.
Just a couple of examples of things that you could do during this time that I personally do are:
- Setting intentions
- Being grateful
- Reading affirmations
2. Set Yourself Up To Succeed Each Day
A practical step that you can take towards manifesting more and hustling less is to change the way you write your to do lists.
An unhelpful practice that leads towards hustling more is to write one massive to do list that never ends. As humans we love to feel the feeling of accomplishment, but if your to do list never ends, you’ll always feel stressed and you’ll never feel successful.
To feel the feelings of success and therefore attract more success, what you need to do instead is to just set one main task for yourself every day, and a maximum of 3 tasks.
When you achieve your one main task you’ll feel so proud of yourself and it’s such a satisfying feeling.
You might be telling me, “well that’s OK for you to say, I’ve got a million things that have to be done.” and here’s what I say to that. Create Success Rituals which are groups of lots of small tasks that you repeat over and over to achieve one main task.
For example, creating one piece of content and publishing it is an example of a Success Routine.
It sounds like just one task but really it has loads of small tasks that go into the whole process of getting content published such as creating images, writing social media captions, scheduling the content, planning it, creating it etc.
If you were to write all of these sub-tasks on your to do list every day you’d definitely get overwhelmed. So what I do is write down all of the tasks involved in each Success Ritual once and use it as a checklist when I create each new piece of content.
So I only write ‘Create content piece’ on my to do list for each day. Then my brain thinks, that’s easy, it’s only one task. I can easily do that. But if I wrote down a million sub-tasks, I’d feel completely overwhelmed by them all when I looked at my to do list.
In a minute I’m going to share another tip to help you reduce your workload further.
3. Reward Yourself More
To get your brain into a more positive state where you receive success, and work less hours, you need to be feeding it with positive messages.
Be proud of yourself for the work that you have done and you’ll attract more success to you.
Just take one minute at the end of every day to notice the work that you have done, and you’ll see how productive and how successful you really are.
Most people don’t even recognize the work they’ve done and they move straight on to the next task without taking a moment to reflect and pat themselves on the back. We all need praise, and as business owners, the only person who is going to give you praise is you. So be a good manager to yourself and give yourself a glowing appraisal.
How To Manifest More Business While Working Less
1. Do Only The Work That You Love And Need To Do
To be in a state of manifestation, it is important that you don’t overstretch yourself and that you enjoy your work. That means that you need to do work that you enjoy most of the time.
What work in your business do you enjoy the most?
Did you answer, “I enjoy all of it”?
Some people really do enjoy most of the work they do, and they are still doing too much and hustling too hard.
I am one of those people who does enjoy almost all of the work that is involved in running a business.
But I have chosen not to do all of it.
So I choose to only do the work that I enjoy the most, and the work that nobody else could do but me.
This means that I spend the majority of my working day creating content, and working on promotions.
I couldn’t outsource my content because I have a personal brand and I want to share my message, not someone else’s. My message is my passion and my reason for being in business. I have an information based business. And that information is only coming from me at the moment.
So I do what I love and what only I could do which is write blog posts, record podcasts and videos for free content and promotions.
And that doesn’t mean that I do EVERYTHING when it comes to my content.
I write my content, and my assistant creates images and publishes this content which is very time consuming.
I actually DO love to create images, but I choose not to do it.
I let this task go because I care about my own health and the success of my business.
And I know that I’m not physically capable of doing ALL of the work. So I made a choice, and this is what I chose, to do the highest impact, most enjoyable work.
2. Manifest That Someone Will Do Most Of The Work
So what about the rest of the work. Who does this?
Now we need to intend that someone else is going to do that work.
You might be telling me that you don’t have the money right now to hire someone to take this other work off your hands?
I’m not suggesting that you go into debt to hire help for your business.
Instead what I suggest you do is intend that help is going to show up soon. Let go of how that is going to happen. Be grateful that help is on the way.
This is what it means to manifest business success.
3. Commit To The Marathon, Not The Sprint
And also remember that businesses are marathons, and not sprints. Businesses are very rarely successful overnight because they have too many moving parts.
What is the point in working longer hours to do slightly more work now if it means you lost out on years of your life through ill health?
Why race to the finish now only to find out that your goal didn’t actually make you happy in the end?
Why sacrifice all of the fun in your life to earn more money, only to realise that money can’t buy you love?
These are all lessons that most business owners have had to learn the hard way. Have you already had to learn these painful lessons yourself?
If not, will you allow the mistakes of others to shine a light on what true success really means?
My belief is that I choose to let business be fun, easy and balanced. I choose to be successful at managing my time AND earning more.
